Digicom test infrastructure is growing across different CoEs, Academia, Government Institutions to meet the needs of development and manufacturing ecosystem. Key infrastructure facilities are presented here. Users are encouraged to provide additional details through crowd sourcing to add information on unlisted facilities. With the growing number of technology companies in communication products including 5G, IoT, Radio, Satellite products, Quantum etc., test infrastructure availability is important to support the growing ecosystem needs.
Indigenous 5G Test Bed
Keeping in view India’s specific requirements and to take lead in 5G deployment, DoT approved a financial grant of Rs. 224 Crore in March 2018 for setting up a ‘Indigenous 5G Test Bed’, a multi-institute collaborative project. The 5G testbed, an open-box testbed, enables industry to go deeper into subsystem level for developing and testing their products and also to test the use cases at its edge.
The eight collaborating institutes in the project are IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IISc Bangalore, Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research (SAMEER) and Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT). The project has been dedicated to nation by Hon’ble PM on 17th May 2022.
In order to facilitate development of indigenous technology in line with the spirit of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ programme, the usage charges for the Test Bed have been kept nominal with nil fee for Startups and MSMEs upto Jan,2023.
Register for using 5G Testbed scheduling at CEWiT, Chennai (IIT Research Park).

Labs in TEC
The National Telecom Policy mandated “To mandate testing and certification of all telecom products for conformance, performance, interoperability, health, safety, security, EMF/ EMI/ EMC etc. to ensure safe-to-connect and seamless functioning of existing and future networks.” It also provided “To create suitable testing infrastructure for carrying out conformance testing, certification and to aid in development of new products and services.
TEC being the operator-neutral technical wing of DoT is positioned to embark upon the project of establishing test-beds for NGN by setting up test and certification infrastructure, intended to primarily serve telecom equipment manufacturers, telecom operators, application and content providers, independent software developers and other stakeholders.

BIS Laboratory Services
BIS grants licenses/registrations to such manufacturers who are capable of producing goods conforming to relevant Indian Standards, on continuous basis.
Private Test Beds
It is reported that private test beds are set up by Telecom Service Providers and Private solution providers such as CapGemini, L&T, HCL, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, GE Medial / Wipro, Bosch, Nokia, Ericsson, Amantya Technologies Pvt. Ltd. etc.
Setting up of 5G Use Case Labs
DoT has set up Inter-Ministerial Committee for setting up of India specific Use Case labs in different economic verticals like Education, Healthcare, Agriculture, Public safety, FinTech etc. DoT has approved proposal for setting up of 5G Use Case Lab in Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) at Institute of Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT), an Institute under RBI, at Hyderabad with a proposed funding requirement of Rs. 22 Crores for a period of 3 years. IDRBT has started working with banks and industry for development of Use cases in Banking services. IDRBT has identified Fifteen entities for potential use case development, broadly in the areas of customer self-service, collaboration between BFS and telcos, NG-branches, and field staff enablement. IDRBT is also working with banks and start-ups to pilot the use cases. A broad range of technologies are being leveraged for the use cases, including AR/VR/MR, Cloud & MEC, Computer Vision, Wearables, Haptics, Humanoids, IoT, Drones, AI / ML, and DLT.
5G Network in a Box
5G Network in a box supports a “5G Stand Alone” network solution (ready-in-minutes portable). The software and hardware can support 5G SA, 5G NSA or 4G LTE operations. It can also be used to create testing environment as it contains a 5G Core, an optional 4G Evolved Packet Core, eNodeB/gNodeB. Private solution providers such as Amantya Technologies Pvt. Ltd, Signalchip, Lekha, Resonous, Kenstel etc.
MSME Testing Centre
The Government of India, realizing that it would be difficult for individual MSME units to set up their own full-fledged laboratories for testing their products for conforming to national and international standards, has set up four regional testing laboratories, one each in Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, and New Delhi.
National Test House
NTH imparts its services to the nation through six of its regional branches located at Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Ghaziabad, Jaipur and Guwahati. In all these branches testing and evaluation facilities of finished products/raw materials of all the branches of engineering disciplines are available under one roof. Test and evaluation of materials, products, equipment’s, modules, system and sub-system in practically all branches of Science & technology. Calibration in the field of Electrical and non-electrical measurement against appropriate Reference Standards having traceability to National Standards.
More information on Government Funded 5G Test Bed
Key outcomes expected from the usage of test bed and the Transfer of technologies are:
- More startups able to develop and make the products market ready in 5G areas
- Product development times are cut down by licensing the IPs and also by using the test bed for R&D
- Helps the companies in preparing the products by doing pre-interop testing in the test bed
- Development of Indigenous solutions for Indian 5G market
- Capacity building in 5G technologies
- Verifying and demonstrating IPs for future standards
- Provide the base for development of next generation cellular technologies
